Featuring a Facebook Cause on a Facebook Page

Posted by: eileenlambert on: December 21, 2009

A lot of people have met challenges when trying to feature a Facebook Cause (nonprofit) on a Facebook page. Which is unfortunate because Pages are much better avenues for daily news than Causes, since Causes doesn’t put content into news feeds.

So if you’re one of the people who can’t seem to make it work, here’s the how-to that so far seems to work — until the next Facebook update of course! (I have heard a rumor that the Boxes tab is going away, and that’ll certainly affect things, so do this now before they change things again!)

I correlate the steps below with screenshots at the bottom of this entry.

To feature a Facebook Cause on your Facebook Page:

  1. You need to be the admin for your Facebook page.
  2. It appears that you need to use Internet Explorer to do this. In Firefox, the blue pencil doesn’t appear when necessary for step #9 below. (Get on the ball Facebook and Causes, Firefox has surpassed Internet Explorer in popularity!)
  3. Click “Edit Page” under your Facebook Page profile photo.
  4. Scroll to the bottom where it says “More Applications – Applications you may find useful” and click the link for Causes.
  5. If Causes isn’t listed, then click “Browse more” and then you can get to Causes that way. Then top left, click “Add to my Page.” Choose your Page.
  6. Now the Causes Application will be listed when you click “Edit Page.”
  7. Scroll down to Causes under the Applications heading. Choose “Application Setting.” Where is says “Boxes” (if it says available) click ADD.
  8. On the Causes Application box, click “Edit.” Type in the name of your cause in the search box, find it, and then “Join Cause.” It will place the Causes box in your “Boxes” tab.
  9. Go to the Boxes tab in your page profile.
  10. In the Causes Box, click the pencil to “move to Wall”.

Let me know if this does/doesn’t work for you.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thanks for the write up on what should happen. The problem, however, appears to still exist.

It appears that if I, the cause admin, does not have a Facebook Profile (personal) I cannot add it to my Facebook Page (company page). I’m sure this is app specific, as some Twitter apps have the same restrictions. I won’t complain about how horrible a situation this is, but I note that the only possible solution (afaik) is to be loggin into a personal Facebook account to add the goods.

Yes I do believe you’re right that you must have a personal profile page on Facebook in order for this to work. You could always set up a personal profile page and set the permissions to be super tight so that no one will ever find you. This will allow you to be able to associate a Facebook Cause with a Facebook Page without really having to put any time into managing a personal page. If you need help with that (with setting up very strong permissions to hide your personal page) let me know.

I was reading your posts on the causes discussion and you listed this link. You must be an expert so I am reaching out to you and hope you can help me.

I too started with a personal FB page and added a cause, Walk to Washington, and it was hooked up directly to my personal page.

Then I started our non profit page, The Walk For Depression, and tried to move the Cause Page and struggled. However, with your posts I was able to list the Cause on our non profit page.

Here is my problem, when I go to our non profit page, The Walk For Depression, it appears that I am going through my personal page. The dark blue banner across the top is the same for my personal as it is for our non-profit.

I am having a hard time wrapping my mind around this. I thought they were two different pages. Thought I would have to sign in to each independently.

Can you help? This is driving me nuts!

Here is The Walk For Depression: http://www.facebook.com/pages/THE-WALK-FOR-DEPRESSION/239747445786?ref=search&sid=700312227.2001047935..1

Thank you!

Steve

Hi Steve,
I actually think you are doing things completely right. If you have a Facebook personal profile, then your Facebook page is connected to it. That’s how it knows you’re the admin and you don’t have to log in a second time (a good thing!). The top blue banner does apply to you personally, just as it applies personally to anyone who visits your page. So for example, I just went to your The Walk For Depression page. The top blue banner would get me back to my main feed or my profile. I’m logged in, so everything in the blue banner refers to me. I’m not sure if you’re concerned that people might see your personal info, but that is not the case. When they are logged in, they can navigate to your page and they can navigate elsewhere using their top banner. Go to the page I manage for example: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Water-For-People/21207514564. The blue banner is still yours, not mine. Essentially Facebook is not a collection of web sites that might live on their own, it is a collection of web pages all under the umbrella of Facebook. So in the end, I think what you set up appears to be working. Let me know if I have misunderstood though!

You are the smartest person in the world!

Steve and I continued our conversation via email, but I thought the info might help others, so I wanted to paste it here as well. In this, I am answering questions he posed to me:

Question: I navigate from my page (Steve Curran) to the Walk To Washington Cause Page by going to the icon at the bottom of my page. How do I navigate to The Walk For Depression page?

Answer: Two ways. 1) Click Profile at the top, then Info, then scroll down and click “See all” under Pages and click or page. OR 2) what I do, because it’s much easier, is I have the page “bookmarked” or marked as a “favorite” (depending on whether you use Firefox or Explorer as your browser) and I get to the page easily by choosing it from my “favorite” web sites. You “favorite” by clicking Favorites in your top banner of your browser then add to favorites. Then that page will live in that drop-down list. The direct URL is http://www.facebook.com/pages/THE-WALK-FOR-DEPRESSION/239747445786.

Question: How do I post from The Walk page to someone’s wall so it shows The Walk logo instead of my picture?

Answer: Are you saying you just want something you post on your Walk Page to show up on Fans news feeds? If so, then that’s what already happens. Your “Walk” logo is what shows up on Fans pages for anything you post on your Walk page wall. Am I correctly understanding your question?

Question: Am I right in that people become a friend to my personal page and a fan of The Walk Page and a member of the Walk To Washington Cause?

Answer: Yes.

  • They “friend” you and it may or may not have anything to do with the Walk nonprofit you’re associated with. It could be old high school friends that have nothing to do with the Walk.
  • They “Fan” the Facebook “Walk for Depression” page, and then they see anything you post on the page in their news feed when they check in on Facebook.
  • They “Join” a Cause and can donate here, but the cause has a lot fewer options. Posts on a cause do not go into the news feed. You can email announcements through the cause, but I find that very interruptive. People on Facebook don’t want to be emailed, in my opinion.

So in the end, interlinking each, the way you are, is ideal. You really want people to “Fan” the page first and foremost in my opinion. Have them join the cause if they want to donate. Then periodically ask “Fans” on Facebook to “suggest the page to friends” then you gradually grow your list of fans and gain a viral following. Then when you do a donation appeal, that’s a good time to point them to the Cause, but if you’re not asking for money, I find the Cause page somewhat worthless — meaning, if you’re sharing info and not asking for money in a particular post, put it on your Facebook page and if you have time add it to your Cause page, but I really think it’s second in priority.
